ARTIST STATEMENT

I enjoy the surprise of finding images in my work absorbed from life.

From my parents escaping the holocaust, from early life in the beauty of Florence and the colors of Tuscany, to the light and mysticism of the Middle East, to the mystery of Paris and art school there; to SoHo in early70’s; to working years in textile design. And with Judaism framing it all.

Like life, Art is a big surprise going beyond our imaginations.

Laura Orefice Stevens is a multi-media visual artist based in New York.  Born in Livorno, Italy, she has lived in Paris, Morocco and Israel.  At the end of the 1960s, she
was part of a flourishing group of Lower East Side artists and worked as a textile designer, creating fabrics for such fashion icons as Laura Ashley working at Gloria Buce’ and other studios.

After raising a family and spending some years teaching, Laura has now returned to the full-time practice of art.

Her work has been shown in a number of galleries, including the Bernard Museum of Judaica, and been featured in Moment Magazine.
