“THE ART OF HEALING”
2022, time to heal and regain some sense of security or normalcy.
“Farewells and Encounters” 8 images each 12” X18”.
This is an emotional universal message we can all relate to:
How many dear people in our lives we had to say goodbye to?
How many loved ones did we meet again?
4” X 5” handmade book on hand made paper has short passages from Exodus and 19 illustrations may relate to our own exodus from where we were to where we are going.
I chose parts of the story that affected me the most.
Miriam, who was responsible for Moses’ birth and his survival. Later on, she was a powerful force helping the Israelites to cross the Red Sea to freedom.
Moses, growing up and belonging in two conflicting worlds—as a surviving Israelite among slaves and as a prince raised in the Egyptian palace.
Water as LIFE, found in the name “Miriam,” or Mir Yam (Yam=sea, in Hebrew) the place where baby Moses was found and saved, as well as the passage of the Israelite from slavery to freedom.
Music, Miriam’s song of redemption in the face of fear as well as Moses’ song of fear in the face of mortality.
The year 2020.
Faced with the loss of the world as I knew it, lacking any sense of security or normalcy, I was invaded only by dark thoughts. Isolated from my family and bombarded by horrible news-- the pandemic, murderous racism and natural disasters--I was unable to unravel the knots in my mind. As an artist, I’m accustomed to express my feelings in images but I couldn’t begin to make art from my fears. Only when I turned to the sacred texts of my Jewish tradition did I begin to see images that became the theme of this group of work. Who by water and who by fire? Creation. Last breath. Farewells. These works confront fear, separation and death. Making art from these feelings was helpful and transformative.
